The historical churches of the region
The church of AuraThe church of Aura was originally built in 1804 to be the church of the dependent parish of Prunkkala. The current church of Aura is a cruciform church made according to the drawings of Mikael Piimänen´s Director´s Office. The high roof and some other details differ from the original drawings.
The church and the bell tower of KoskiIn the year 1777 a beautiful bell tower was built. The bell tower was designed by the famous building contractor and church builder Mikael Piimänen (Hartlin). The decision to conserve the bell tower was made already in the year 1935 and it is now used as the cemetery chapel.
The current church of Koski is the 5th in order. The construction started in 1933 and the church was ready in 1935. The church is a basilica with an eastern tower, in the western end of which there is a sacristy narrower and lower than the main room. The style is close to neoclassical. The outer walls of the church are plastered and painted white. The roofs are made of red bricks.
The church of Loimaa Proper
The church of Loimaa Proper was built in the 1830’s. The designers of the church were C. Bassi and C.L. Engel. The altar painting was painted by R.W. Ekman. The church burned down in the year 1888, but was rebuilt according to the drawings of J. Stenbäck.
The church of Alastaro
The current church of Alastaro used to be the main church in the parish of Greater Loimaa until the early days of the 19th century. A new church was built in Loimaa and the dependent parish of Alastaro bought the old one in the year 1837. The church was rebuilt at its current place in the years 1840-41.
The church received its current appearance in the renovation of the years
1896-97, for which the architect J. Stenbäck was responsible. The church is seated for approximately 700 people.
The church of Mellilä
The appearance of the wooden church of Mellilä differs from the traditional pompous style of the churches. It was built by the crofter Saarinen in the years 1824-25. According to the original plan even three towers were planned to be built in the church. The altar painting was painted by Edvin Lyden. There is a beautiful graveyard around the church.
The church of Marttila
The church of Marttila was built in 1765 by the church constructor Antti Piimänen. It represents the southwest Finnish basilica style developed by himself. It´s the fourth church of Marttila and the third in this place. The movable property dates back to the Middle Ages. There is also a crucifix from the 16th century and a pulpit donated by Per Brahe. The chandelier of the church has been a model for the chandeliers in the church of Turku Castle.
The church of Oripää
The wooden cruciform church in Oripää was built in the year 1827. It was designed by the Italian architect C. Bassi. The altar painting was painted by Emil Rautala in 1929. There are three bells in the church, of which the oldest one is from the year 1750. The baptismal font and the candlesticks made of tin have been donated by the Swedish twin municipality Sveljunga.
The church of Pöytyä
The wooden cruciform church in Pöytyä was built in the year 1793 and was designed by Mikael Piimänen. Next to the church there is a rare timber enclosure from the old church. At the church square there is a clearer´s statue and on the graveyard a soldier´s statue, both designed by Aarre Aaltonen. There are also monuments of Antti Lizelius and Fr. G. Hedberg in the church area. The church milieu has been recognized as a nationally remarkable and both culturally and historically valuable area.

The church of Karinainen
The church of Karinainen is located in the village of Karinainen and was built in the year 1835. The wooden church with its three rafters represents pure cruciform church style. Both the altar painting and the reliefs of the pulpit were designed by the academician Wäinö Aaltonen. The sculpture on the soldier´s grave called “The Grief” was also designed by him. The old graveyard dates back to the year 1657. The new graveyard designed by Wäinö Aaltonen´s son Matti Aaltonen was consecrated in 1920.
The church of St. Olavi in Yläne
The church of St. Olavi was built in the year 1782 and is located in the place of an old chapel built in1663. The shrine of Yläne is a combination of a cruciform church and a basilica, and is seated for 600 people. It was designed by Mikael Piimänen. The organ of the church is one of the oldest in Finland.

The church of Tarvasjoki
The church of Tarvasjoki is a wooden cruciform church designed by Mikael Hartlin-Piimänen. It´s the third church in this place, built in the year 1779. A piece of a Pieta collection from the 15th century is preserved in the sacristy of the church. The pulpit (1746), the altar painting (1745), a brass chandelier and
a round chandelier, two church bells and some of the clothes and vessels are a cultural heritage from the times of the old church. There are also many valuable works of art in the church.
