Oripää – well-known for its water

Oripää is situated in Southwestern Finland along the highway Kantatie 41 that leads from Turku to Tampere. Oripää is famous for its clean and clear groundwater. The River Aura, the symbol of the whole Southwestern Finland begins in Oripää. An old story tells as follows: The Giant of Oripää ploughed with oxes. The oxes got furious of a sting by a warble fly and ran away to the south, ploughing a huge furrow. The furrow was filled with water and that is how the river Aurajoki was created.myllylähde

Under the trees lies the beautiful home of artist Viljo Syrjämä. The artist designed and built his house himself. Even the bricks in the wall are self-made. The only bought piece of furniture is the piano. The model and the idea for the building came from a photograph presenting the Byzantine covenant San Marco in Florence. The Byzantine style can be seen in the cupolas, vaults and golden-based mosaics of the building. The works of artist Syrjämä remind many of us of the pieces by Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

- Hartmann cottageHartmann cottage
The Hartmann cottage is the only museum in Finland Proper exhibiting the personal way of life from 1930’s to 1960’s. The cottage itself was built in the 1870’s and it belonged to a rental farmer. The cottage with its interior is as it was left by the last tenants Ida (1878-1961) and Olga (1881-1970) Hartmann.

The old storehouse built in 1912 is nowadays a museum. Here you can see the way of life in the old days. There is, for example, a unique carriage decorated with golden lion heads.
