Koski – in the surge of the rapids

Koski has got its name from the many rapids of the river Paimionjoki that demonstrate the vital life of the municipality well.

MyllyrantaMyllyranta in Koski

Myllyranta is one of the old mill rapids of the river Paimionjoki. The area is located close to the centre of Koski, next to the Ox Road of Häme, and near to the old bell tower and the graveyard. The village has originally arisen in the crossroads of two important traffic routes, the Ox Road of Häme and the river Paimionjoki. The rapids area is a culturally and historically remarkable area that has given its name to the manor, the chapel and the municipality of Koski. There were mills in operation since the 16th century until the 1980’s.

The project “Development of the Rapids Milieu in the Municipality

of Koski” started the renovation of the area in the year 1999. Its goal is to preserve the historical cultural milieu and develop it as a tourist and recreational attraction. The nature, landscape and history all together create a rare entity.

Professor Yrjö Liipola (1881-1971) was one of the leading sculptors in his days. The collection of the art museum consists of approximately 185 works of art and the oldest one “Bust of Viljo Kittilä” is from the year 1900. There are also many treasured rarities from his home where European culture was cherished; furniture, porcelain, photographs, paintings, certificates of honour, documents and articles.
